Faceting is the process of positioning and cutting additional surfaces on the surface of a gemstone bead. Simple faceted shapes may have only a few faceted cuts, such as a rectangular cube bead that has all eight corners cut off (called a Russian cut or Princess cut). Intricately faceted beads might have dozens of tiny and evenly spaced facets, as in a micro-faceted rondelle, or might have laboriously arranged patterns of facets, as in a spiral twist faceted drop. The more faceted surfaces added to a bead tends to give the gemstone more sparkle and appeal.

All this additional labor does have it's price. Simply faceted beads tend to add 20 to 40% of cost over a similarly sized and shaped smooth gemstone strand. Highly numbered and uniformly faceted cuts can cost three or more times as much as that basic smoothly polished strand.
